MARQUISE |
9km from the coast lies Marquise, population 5,000, with its attractive central square containing the town hall, a butcher, baker, pharmacy, florist, shoe shop, hairdresser, small supermarket, bars and banks, to name but a few. There are three major supermarkets in and around the town. It’s an active little town and on Thursday mornings, the market can be found in the town square and its adjoining streets. This magnificent looking Palladian fronted hotel dates from 1832 and is sited 2 km to the west of Marquise. Peaceful and set in several acres, this building was taken over by the Germans during WW2 and has served as a hospital. However owing to the place’s chequered life, this is not a de luxe hotel.
